President Ram Nath Kovind condoled the demise of thespian Soumitra Chattopadhyay on Sunday. The iconic figure of Indian cinema breathed his last after a long battle with COVID-19 at a Kolkata private hospital on Sunday morning.
Paying his homage to the legendary actor, Kovind in his condolence message said: “With the passing of Soumitra Chatterjee, Indian cinema has lost one of its legends. He will be specially remembered for the ‘Apu’ trilogy and other memorable performances in Satyajit Ray‘s masterpieces. He made immense contribution to the craft of acting.”

His tweet further read: “Soumitra Chatterjee’s performances won him several national and international awards including Dadasaheb Phalke Award, Padma Bhushan and Légion d’Honneur. Condolences to his family, the film fraternity and millions of fans across the world.”

Soumitra Chatterjee was admitted to a private hospital on October 6, just a day after he had tested positive for COVID-19. The celebrated actor then tested negative a little after a week on October 14 but he was still hospitalized because of health complications, particularly due to the COVID-19 induced encephalopathy.
After making his debut with Satyajit Ray’s ‘Apur Sansar’, Soumitra Chattopadhyay marched on to appear in more than 200 films, many of which receiving both commercial success and critical acclaim. He had acted act in the films of a number of big directors including Mrinal Sen and Tapan Sinha along with mesmerizing his fans with his performances in theatre, literrary works and reciting poetry.
