Exclusive: Emraan on Asif Basra suicide

Emraan Hashmi shared screen space with Asif Basra who committed suicide yesterday. The 53-year old actor was found hanging in his Himachal Pradesh home. Talking to ETimes this evening, Emraan said, “I am extremely shocked. We have lost so many actors this year. Add this to the several miseries 2020 has brought. What a grief-stricken year!”
Emraan reminisces Asif seemed a very positive person who was very easy to go along with, when they worked together in the Ekta Kapoor produced ‘Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai‘ (2010), directed by Milan Luthria. “I had kept in touch with Asif over text messages after the film and then we bumped into each other a couple of times. I followed his work. He was a very good actor. I loved him in ‘Hichki’ and ‘Paatal Lok’. I will never forget the scene I shot with him and Randeep Hooda for ‘Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai’ at Yari Road. It was a jail shot.”

Adds Emraan, “Asif had a very sunny disposition, he was a very chilled out guy. He had a very captivating face. You could make out he was a nice person.”

However, Emraan says that he is unaware of the back story in Asif’s life and hence would not comment on what might have prompted Asif to take such a drastic step. “You can’t know how people react to things and what has actually happened. You can never know everything about any person, howsoever close you might be to him/her.””
