Republic TV editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami, in judicial custody since last Wednesday in an abetment to suicide case, moved the Supreme Court on Tuesday challenging a Bombay high court decision declining him interim bail. The apex court is scheduled to hear the petition on Wednesday.
Filing the appeal in the SC within 24 hours of Bombay HC declining him relief, Goswami said the HC failed to appreciate that his arrest in an “illegally reopened case” depicted the state government’s attitude to wreak vengeance against him for exercising his right to free speech to criticise the Shiv Sena-NCP-Congress coalition government led by Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray.
He said the case was closed in 2019 after police filed a final report saying there was no evidence against him. The case was reopened by the present government after the deceased person’s relatives met the state home minister and sought a reinvestigation. Goswami’s SLP has made the following respondents — Maharashtra government, station house officer of Alibaug police station, Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh, the Union government and Akshata Anvay Naik, wife of the deceased. Goswami was arrested on November 4 and the trial court sent him to judicial custody. His interim bail plea was rejected by the HC on Monday which said further investigation being carried out into the alleged abetment to suicide case was not illegal. The HC had suggested that Goswami seek regular bail from the sessions court in Mumbai.
