NEW DELHI: Is there legal trouble brewing for the partnership between Hero MotoCorp and Harley-Davidson? Unhappy for being “kept in the cold” as Harley decided to exit direct operations in India and partner Hero for maintaining business, dealers of the American company are planning to approach courts.
Top sources in the Harley dealer fraternity told TOI that 33 dealers are “not happy with the treatment that they have received” and thus may decide to sue.
“Talks are already on with some of the country’s top legal firms,” a source said, adding that the discussions have been on for weeks. Harley’s dealers will come out with their grievances in a press conference that they will hold with dealer association FADA on Tuesday.
The dealers refused to comment on record. Questions sent to Harley were not answered. A spokesperson for Hero Moto said, “We would not like to comment on any market speculation with regards to retrospective matters between Harley Davidson and the dealers.”
Harley had been struggling in India for the past few years, and on September 24 , announced shutting of its only factory in Haryana, making it clear that it does not intend to run solo.
On October 27, it, however, said it will be entering into a non-equity partnership with Hero Moto to develop and manufacture mid-sized engine bikes and take care of sales and service of its existing bikes and merchandise.
