Exclusive! Divya Dutta on working with SRK

Bollywood’s Baadshah Shah Rukh Khan is celebrating his 55th birthday today. While wishes have been pouring in from all sides on social media, we got in touch with actress Divya Dutta who shared screen space with the superstar in Yash Chopra’s ‘Veer Zaara’.
In an exclusive interview with ETimes, Divya walked down memory lane as she recalled her first impression of the actor, all the fun she had with SRK on the sets of the film, and more. Excerpts…

You have worked with Shah Rukh Khan in ‘Veer Zaara’. How is he as a co-star?
For me, Shah Rukh Khan will always be the most charming co-star I have ever worked with. He makes sure you are comfortable and happy on the set. I think ‘Charming’ is just his second name. His generosity and chivalry are amazing.

Were you nervous when you first saw him on set? What was your first impression of him?
I wasn’t nervous about meeting him as such. I have been watching him since the ‘Fauji’ days. All we girls had a huge crush on him. To work with him again in ‘Veer Zaara’ was a delight.

Any incidents you can recall from the sets of ‘Veer Zaara’ with Shah Rukh?
I remember there was this scene we were doing in ‘Veer Zaara’ where I was supposed to get up and reach out to Shah Rukh for something and I was on a charpoy. Every time I used to get up from the charpoy, I used to break the POP behind the set wall. It was really funny that SRK was trying to control his laughter. I promised them that I would break the wall and eventually I did. Everyone was stunned and quiet and Shah Rukh burst out laughing. We both were laughing so hard that Yash (Chopra) uncle told us to go sit in a corner, laugh it out and come back. I will never forget that incident.

What is that one quality in SRK that makes him stand out from others?
I remember whenever we all travelled together, he made sure all girls got into their cars safely and then he used to leave.

What is your favourite SRK film?
There are so many Shah Rukh Khan films that I like but of course, ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ is my favourite. I fall in love with it as many times I see it. I also loved the recent ‘Dear Zindagi’, ‘Swades’ and ‘Chak De! India’ are great film. I guess he just has to open his arms and we are all his!

Pick one Hollywood movie where you think SRK would fit perfectly.
I would see Shah Rukh in most romantic films. I would see him in ‘Notting Hill’ and ‘Pretty Woman’. He is the king of romance.

One message you would like to give him on his birthday this year.
Stay the charming and adorable one that you always are. And let’s work together again. I am missing all the laughter and joy of working with you!
