MANGALURU: Two hostels in the Mangalore University campus at Mangalagangothri have been declared as containment zones, after 12 Covid-19 cases were reported there on Friday.
The daily Covid-19 cases in Dakshina Kannada district crossed the 100 mark for the first time in 2021. The district reported 105 fresh cases, after conducting more than 2,500 tests. With this, the district has 604 active cases as on Friday.
Dr Ashok H, nodal officer for Covid-19 in the district, told TOI that 12 cases were found in one women’s hostel and another boy’s hostel on the university campus. “We have visited the campus and sought details of the students staying in two hostels, where Covid-19 cases were reported. Many positive cases were reported on the university campus earlier too. However, cases were sporadic and not from a single block. Since the 12 cases reported on Friday were from two hostels, we have declared them containment zones, and directed the university authorities not to allow students to move outside. We also have sought details of the total number of students staying in the two hostels,” he said.
The health department has planned to collect swabs from nearly 1,200 students from the campus on Saturday. “All primary contacts of the positive cases in the campus will be made to undergo RT-PCR tests,” he said.
On a sudden jump in the number of cases in the district, Dr Ashok said that cases were reported from different areas. “More cases are being reported during the contact tracing process. We have been collecting swabs of all primary contacts and others in the nearby areas of the positive cases,” he said.
